How To: Choose The Right Epilator For You

Oct 20. 2021 by Shaver Shop Team

A product of the 1980s, epilators have stood the test of time and remain a popular hair-removal option, whether it’s for the legs, body or face. Epilators use a tweezer mechanism to pluck the hair out from the root, stunting regrowth and leading to longer-lasting results. Users can expect smooth skin for up to four weeks and because epilators can pick up the tiniest of hairs, there’s no prickly growing-out phase to endure.

Today’s epilators are more accurate, versatile and comfortable than their predecessors, and there are plenty on the market with variations to suit different preferences, budgets and areas of hair. So, which to buy? Here are some considerations before you choose your weapon.

WHERE’S THE HAIR?

Epilators sure can get around. Legs, feet, body, face. Some get the lot done, while others are designed for specific areas. If it's facial hair you’re targeting, try Braun's FaceSpa Pro SE911 and it makes quite a statement. It’s the world’s first all-in-one device for epilation, cleansing and skin toning. It's great for removing hair on the chin, upper lip and forehead, and to maintain eyebrow shape. For versatility, the Braun Silk-épil Flex Beauty Set is suited to face and body epilation, while a host of models can create a hair-free zone from the shoulders down. For larger areas, look for a wider epilator head that will cover more skin for faster hair removal.

WET OR DRY?

Epilating works best on dry skin but can offer a gentler experience in water, which is why many new epilators can perform in both conditions. With its anti-slip grip, the Philips Satinelle Epilator is ideal for use in water, whether you prefer a shower or bath. There is also a broad range of Braun epilator models which are designed for wet or dry use for your convenience.

ARE YOU BASIC?

Of course not. But maybe a basic model will do the job for you, in which case perhaps the Braun Series 5 Epilator can be of service. Perfect for beginners, the Series 5 features micro-grip tweezer technology and can remove hairs as short as a grain of sand. It also comes with two speed settings – one extra gentle, the other extra efficient – while the shaver and trimmer heads provide options for sensitive areas.

Far from basic, the Braun Silk-épil 9 Flex Beauty Set is the world’s first epilator for women with a fully flexible head, for effortless hair removal. This model is a true multi-tasker, comprising four attachments so you can shave, trim, massage and exfoliate, plus FaceSpa with a facial epilator, cleansing brush and massage pad. The Braun Series 9 Epilator is comparable, but without the FaceSpa and its attachments. Like the Series 5, both Series 9 models feature micro-grip technology.

SHOW ME THE MONEY

All models vary in price but that price will be determined by various factors like the number of attachments included, where you can use it and if it's suitable for wet or dry use for example. There is something for everyone with prices ranging from around $50 to nearly $500! Choosing the right product within your budget will come down to what you want in the product and if you'd like a tool with multiple uses.
